Why Does Flushing the Toilet Affect the Shower?
The average person flushes their toilet 6 times a day. When you flush your toilet, it expels water and sludge from the tank.
This water travels through a siphon tube into the bottom of the bowl, where it is drawn up and through a U-bend by the force of gravity.
The U-bend forces water to travel in only one direction down its length, so when you flush your toilet, what’s happening inside is like a giant drain plug washing away all that extra water before it enters your sink or bathtub.
When you flush your toilet during a shower, water starts to flow into the toilet tank. As a result, your shower gets less cold water from the trunk pipe and more hot water from the tank.
The shower’s temperature rises drastically and can get even hotter if you do not stop the water flow. You may even start seeing steam or smoke from your shower, which is dangerous.
The cause of this problem is the toilet’s flushing action. Water starts flowing into the sewer via the flapper valve when the flush valve opens. Due to the high temperature, pipe joint lubricants and water flow through the pipe, causing friction. This system usually works very well, but it can lead to high water bills, especially when many people use water simultaneously, such as after school or on the weekends.
Why Does the Shower Get Hot When the Toilet Is Flushed?
The shower gets hot when you flush the toilet because both connect the toilet to the same water supply and use the same water heater.
When you flush the toilet, it sends a large amount of cold water into the water heater to refill the toilet tank.
The flow of cold water through the water heater can be so rapid that it forces the temperature of the hot water inside it to drop.
Since cold water has a lower boiling point than hot water, once the hot water temperature falls below 170 degrees, it will begin to boil – and right in your shower!

How Do You Fix a Hot Shower When the Toilet Is Flushed?
1. Check the Water Pressure and Adjust It If Necessary
If your shower is too hot or the water pressure is too low, the cause could be a clogged shower head.
The first step to fixing it would be to check the water pressure by turning on both taps in the sink. If one has good pressure, adjust your shower head accordingly.
2. Clean the Shower Head
Your shower head leaks due to calcium deposits, rust, or a damaged shower head from water pressure.
To determine whether or not there are calcium deposits, pour vinegar onto the shower head and see if it bubbles up.

What to do if Your Upstairs Water Pressure is Too Low
1. Check the water pressure at the main shutoff valve and compare it to the pressure upstairs. Call a plumber if the upstairs pressure is significantly lower than the main shutoff valve.
2. If the upstairs pressure is not significantly lower than the main shutoff valve, try turning off all water in the house, such as sprinklers and toilets. You can improve your water pressure by doing this.
