A gooseneck faucet is mounted on a gooseneck spout with an angled inlet, usually to allow water to stream into the sink or tub.
It is similar to a garden hose faucet but has its special purpose: To provide an outflow of water to wash dishes. You can also find a gooseneck faucet on drinking fountains and hot tubs.
Your gooseneck faucet is dripping because of the O ring deterioration, a condition that can happen when your waterway is subjected to sudden changes in temperature. As the hot water on the faucet heats up, the O rings tend to shrink and get closer together, causing them to wear out faster.
This can lead to the less-than-ideal performance of your faucet and frightening amounts of condensation.
But with a little TLC and O-ring replacement, you can get the performance back on track and stop the drip.
- Turn off the cold-water supply and dab your finger on the faucet to remove any recent residue or debris.
- Install fresh O-rings onto your faucet’s cartridge and install it into the spout, adjusting for a good fit.

Step 1: Prep the Parts

Step 2: Re-install the O-rings

Tighten it up until you feel resistance and stop turning.
Replace the nut over the spout and tighten it with an adjustable wrench or pliers.
Step 4: Test Your Faucet
Move the faucet handle to different positions and ensure that it still works, then turn on hot and cold water to see if it works.
If your faucet still leaks, loosen the cartridge underneath by turning counterclockwise, then tighten them with an adjustable wrench or pliers.

If you have to turn off the water, use a shut-off valve instead of turning off the main valve. This way, you won’t have lost hot water and burst pipes to contend with.
If you do have to turn off the water and don’t want to pull out the toilet, toilets are designed to flush with only 30 Psi, so you can turn off the water without shutting off the main valve and flush it.
This way, it will take longer for your water heater to run out of hot water due to saving that much more on each flush. Just remember to turn on the water when you are finished.

- Remove the drain stopper from the drain (at the bottom of the sink)
- Remove 1/2″ segment of pipe and washer (2 total) at the top of the water drain. These two pieces connect to the main valve on the sink side.
Tap one end with a hammer to loosen it and pull it out of the pipe. Unscrew assembly entirely at the top of the sink. Drain any water that is left in the pipe.

One problem has too much pipe joint compound. Using too much can cause the pipe joint compound to fall out of the valve, but too little will result in a leak.

Why Is My Water Valve Leaking?
Your water valve is leaking because the water in the valve stem is not appropriately sealed. This prevents water from passing through and may damage your plumbing.
Sealing a water valve is relatively easy since you can see the valve stem.
For the most part, a bladder is responsible for sealing water valves and must be inflated with air to maintain that seal.
The seal can fail if the bladder has lost its shape or been punctured due to over-inflation or age.
The seal can also fail if the water pressure is too great to allow the bladder to sit properly in the valve stem.
When a soft rubber bladder leaks, it can be challenging to detect. However, more recent solutions use cola bottle caps or similar ones available in the plumbing supply shops.
If you want to check your valve:
- Turn off the water in your home.
- Pull out the main water pipe that connects to your home.
- Cut this pipe at a place about 12 inches from the fitting. If you can’t find this pipe, go outside and look for a metal pipe from the main line into your house.
This pipe is often black and has a square end. Pull this pipe out of the wall and cut it using a hacksaw. Put your valve under running water.
If you have a ball valve, turn it to the left. If you have a butterfly valve, turn it to the right.
To find out which way the valves are set, look on each cap for an illustration showing which way you should turn it to close the valve.
Why Should You Disconnect The Water Hose In Winter?
Disconnecting the water hose in winter is necessary to prevent the water line from freezing.
Frozen water lines create various problems: the pipe could burst, connect with a different line, or leak.
It’s vital to preserve your home to do everything you can to avoid these hazardous outcomes.
However, it’s not always easy for people who live in more extreme climates (such as Alaska) or are experiencing harsh winters for the first time.
You may be afraid that the water will freeze, you don’t know how long the hose has been frozen, or you simply don’t want to cut it off.
However, cutting off the water supply is the best way to ensure that your water lines won’t freeze.
You can still be careful about how you disconnect the hose. Here are some tips on how to safely and effectively cut off your hose:
If possible, shut off your main supply valve (before you uncoiling the hose). This will prevent a significant mess in case something goes wrong.
Shut-off valves are generally found near or inside the house.
If the water line is close to where it connects to the hose, disconnect it first before cutting off the hose. This prevents a situation like what happened to a man severing his water line.
Don’t cut one end and then go back for another. Cutting a section of the frozen hose makes it more likely that you will disconnect from another part of the pipe.
If you cut off only one end, you’ll be missing pipe sections at both ends of the hose when removing them from winterized pipes.
Always cut from the bottom, pull at an angle, and ensure you can see the hose’s end. This prevents cutting a piece off the water line that won’t be there when you’re finished.
The bottom of the pipe will also give you more leverage to handle a connection with less risk of cutting it too short.
Wrap a layer of newspaper around your hands when removing the hose from pipes so it won’t freeze to them.
You’ll also hold the hose more comfortably while protecting your hands from getting cold.
Don’t use a sharp blade or metal tool. Using these tools, you could accidentally cause damage to the end of the hose or pipe connection.
If you’re unsure how long the water line has been frozen, then it’s probably safer to wait until spring to disconnect it.
How Do To Fix A Leaky Gooseneck Faucet?
Open the faucet’s handle completely to turn off the water supply. Run a rag under the faucet to soak up any accumulated water, then wipe excess water from around the base of the gooseneck.
Use pliers or your hands to pull out the gooseneck faucet’s rubber nozzle, located just below the brass nozzle.
The rubber nozzle should come right out if you pull firmly enough. The gooseneck faucet should now boast complete disassembled.
Remove the rubber nozzle and the brass nozzle with pliers. Do not remove any other parts, such as the wire nuts, seal rings, or washers that hold the gooseneck assembly together.
They will become replaced with new parts during this installation process and should not need to be removed.
Install the new rubber nozzle by sliding it onto the gooseneck, then pushing it back down until it rests against the stop collar. Install the brass nozzle in the same manner.
Ensure that the new rubber nozzle is properly seated on the gooseneck and that you can spin it with your fingers while pressing down firmly.
If you cannot spin it with your fingers, it is not fully seated, and you should remove and replace it.
Place the gooseneck assembly back by aligning the rubber nozzle with the brass nozzle stop collar.
Once properly seated in place, apply a small amount of faucet sealant to both the rubber and brass nozzle stop collars.
Close and tighten the handle assembly by turning it clockwise until it stops.
Flush the entire faucet for at least a minute before using it to allow the sealant to cure fully. It should not leak after this treatment.
If you need to repair the seal between the faucet handle and the valve, remove the handle by removing the screws that hold it in place and a metal collar that presses it against the valve, allowing it to turn.
After removing these parts, you should be able to pull off the handle and lift off a metal ring that press fits against the valve, allowing it to turn.
Use a razor blade to scrape excess sealant from the valve accumulated over time. If the seal is completely broken, use pliers to twist the valve off the water supply pipe.
Finally, apply a new bead of faucet sealant to the inside surfaces of both the handle and valve, being sure not to get any on either of the rubber washers (e.g., gaskets) that press-fit onto each part.
Reassemble the faucet using the same procedure as before, and then test it for leaks by flushing and running water through it.
The sealant should keep any leakage contained until it cures and dries completely.
If you still see a leak after this process, you will have to replace the old seal that is no longer in good shape and the gasket between the faucet handle and valve.
